Women encouraged to look at life through a lens
LIVERPOOL women are being encouraged to channel the likes of Sofia Coppola and Kathryn Bigelow and get behind the camera.
Film Futures is a special course aimed at unemployed women aged 18 and above, and helps to put them on the road to a career in film or TV. It will give them an insight in to the industry – from the creation of an idea, right through to directing, lighting, shooting and editing the final product.
The course is free and organisers First Take, are hosting a couple of taster sessions next week which will give potential students an idea of what to expect from the five months of training. Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis and the sessions take place on:
- Monday 23 June, 10am – 4.30pm, Anfield Breckside Community Corner in Anfield
- Tuesday 24 June, 10am – 4.30pm, Bay TV at Toxteth TV.
No experience is necessary and participants can apply to take the full course during the taster sessions. During the five months, sessions will take place twice a week (14 hours) starting in August.
Mandy Meaghan took advantage of the course in 2014. She said: “I’m not the most technically minded woman and film stuff always scared the life out of me, but Film Futures made me feel like I can achieve anything and has given me the confidence to go for it!”
The course has been part funded by Liverpool City Council.
Assistant Mayor, Councillor Wendy Simon, said: “Many women have the ambition to work in the film or TV industry but don’t have the confidence to take a chance on what is a very competitive sector.
“Film Futures is a fantastic opportunity for women who are out of work, to gain or hone skills which will give them the experience they need to take the first steps towards their dream careers.”
The course includes:
- Six days basic filmmaking training
- Seven days specialised filmmaking and developing new media skills
- 12 days of major group film production, guidance and advice
- A studio visit to Media City
